Welcome to flok Research

Together, we're building the world's first dataset fueled by daily metabolic care. flok Research invites flok app users to contribute their data to help fuel progress for our entire community. Through the lived experience of our members, we're working toward better care, new insights, and faster treatment development for our metabolic conditions.

You'll soon be able to consent to research in-app. Until then, learn more below.

Open Studies in flok Research

These studies will soon be open via the flok app.

  • flok Research is our umbrella study open to all flok App users age 18 or older, and to those under 18 with the consent of their parent or guardian. The study will attempt to:
    • Define the systemic phenotype of flok conditions across physiological systems and comorbidities thereof
    • Identify aspects of phenotype related to underlying disorder vs treatment side effects of a highly restrictive and synthetic diet.
    • Understand the impacts of lack of standardization of care across the population (age, sex assigned at birth and gender identity, economic and geographic distribution)
    • Understand the heterogeneity of phenotype and its impacts on quality of life (QOL)
    • Better understand individual protein tolerance
    • Predict metabolic aberrations (e.g. elevated amino acid levels, impending acute metabolic events)
    • Predict potential response to therapeutics based on genotype & phenotype

    Inclusion criteria:

    • Resides in the United States
    • Has a confirmed diagnosis of one of the flok conditions or is a caregiver for someone with a confirmed diagnosis of one of the flok conditions
    • Is a legal adult (defined as having reached the age of 18) or has been invited to participate in the study by a parent or legal guardian
    • Reads and understands English
    • Has access to an Apple or Android mobile phone
    • Is able to provide informed consent and follow study instructions
  • The Signal Sub-study is a 12-week pilot for adults (18+ considered legal adults where they live) enrolled in flok Research. We're exploring how tools like the flok app and wearable devices can capture meaningful signals—like diet, sleep, symptoms, and wellbeing—in real time. The study does not involve medical treatment or diagnosis.

Why It Matters Your participation helps us improve research tools, understand daily life with a metabolic disorder, and support better care for our community.

    What’s Involved

    • Use the flok app to log food, mood, symptoms, and weekly surveys.
    • Use a provided wearable device to track sleep, activity, and other biometrics
    • Submit weekly blood levels via the flok app (reimbursement provided)
    • Attend brief weekly check-ins with our team for support.
    • Reflect on your experience in a final survey and 1:1 conversation.
